Announcement 2014-04
Subject: Radio Controlled Aircrafts
Issue Date: June 2, 2014

Use of Radio Controlled Aircraft, UAV’s, or Drones at CARS sanctioned events

In recent years we have seen an increase in the use of cameras mounted on Radio Controlled Aircraft, UAV’s or Drones as a method for capturing aerial footage of the event.

With some recent incidents involving these aircraft, the club and event insurance underwriters have advised ASN Canada FIA that Radio Controlled Aircraft, UAV’s or Drones, fall under the aircraft exclusion of the coverage for clubs and events and as such incidents involving these aircraft are not covered.

Because of this, ASN Canada FIA is recommending event organizers not allow any Radio Controlled Aircraft, UAV or Drone to fly, unless they meet Transport Canada regulations and the operator provides proof of insurance.
